Texas – Louisiana – Missouri railroad connection

Like many African American families, some of my folks who lived along Highway 71 got jobs as porters with Southern Pacific Railroads and St. Louis Southwestern Railway (Cotton Belt Route) during the Great Migration.  During the 40′s & 50′s, my grandmother would send her kids who were on summer vacation from Texas to northern Louisiana to help her mother farm the land.  The children were escorted by their Porter uncles. The employment opportunity on the railroad explained the Cade branch of family that migrated to the St. Louis, Missouri area and the multiple branches of Cade’s & Taylor’s that ended up in California.
